PROGRAM NOTES
The Open Table was written for my brother and sister-in-law’s wedding at which the couple served communion. The United Methodist Church has an open communion policy that allows for anyone, regardless of membership status or denomination, to participate in the Holy Eucharist. It is Methodists’ beliefs that the table to which we are called is the Lord’s Table and therefore available to all who wish to come. This short piano piece, intended to accompany a communion portion of a service, includes references to the hymn “And Can It Be” written by Charles Wesley, brother of John Wesley – the founder of the Methodist denomination.
