Freedom to Be
PREMIERE March 14, 2019, Boulder, CO ENSEMBLE horn and piano DURATION 8.5' |
Written as part of The Phoenix Project: From the Ashes, Freedom to Be focuses on giving the performer as much flexibility on entrances as possible. The Phoenix Project seeks to create a collection of pieces for musicians who are recovering from Focal Dystonia, a neurological disorder. None of the horn entrances in Freedom to Be have any strict timing. The piano accompaniment is written to facilitate vamping so as to allow the horn player to enter whenever s/he feels most comfortable doing so. I can only imagine how musicians working through Focal Dystonia might feel restricted and frustrated in their current abilities; things that were once easy are difficult now. Freedom to Be is a piece that allows the performer freedom to be in the moment of where they are in their recovery journey. This piece focuses on freedom of timing; a future companion piece I have in mind would focus on freedom of pitch.
